Outdoor Movie Night May be Postponed Due to Rain

Moviegoers might want to look at the sky before heading outdoors to see “The Blind Side” at Rose Park tonight. On Thursday, officials were uncertain whether the movie would be shown because of the possibility of rain.

“The decision will be made on Friday morning whether to go ahead with it or not,” said Lenka Wright, communications director for the city of Abilene.

The movie is sponsored by AEP Texas and the Abilene Recreation Division.

“We have been showing an outdoor movie for about eight years,” said Anita Vigil, program supervisor for the recreation division. “We usually show movies that are no longer in the box office, because they are less expensive.”

Vigil said that if the movie is rained out, it will be shown at a later time.

Vigil said the event provides a good time for families to come out and enjoy something together.

“Our movies are for families,” she said.

Vigil said there was nothing fancy about the logistics for the movie.

“There are no giant screens, but we do have it on DVD now and the screen is ten-by-ten feet and big enough for people to see,” she said.

Asked about the costs for showing movies, Vigil said the recreation department paid $321 out of its budget. She said the electric company helps by turning the park lights off during the movie.

Vigil said that a couple of people in her department help decide on the movie.

“We try to get something that is popular,” she said.” We have from 50 to 200 people each time.”

“The Blind Side” is the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless youth taken in by a wealthy family that helps him develop his potential in sports and education. Oher becomes an all-American football player and is drafted by the NFL in the first round.

Vigil urges moviegoers to bring blankets, lawn chairs, snacks, and especially mosquito spray and enjoy an evening at the movies. To check the event’s status, call 325-734-5301.
